The Blog

Welcome to the CLC blog!

This is an exciting time to be in the Silicon Valley, and I want everyone to get an inside look. In the 1990s, we led the computer revolution that radically changed the way people did business, learned, and connected. Now we’re leading a new revolution in clean technology that could save our planet from global warming and create thousands of good jobs here at home. As someone who helped lead a little technology startup called Ebay and served as the chief financial officer of the State, I can tell you that we’re about to change the world once again. With groundbreaking environmental policies like cap and trade and a $1 billion investment in clean technologies, Silicon Valley is positioned to lead California’s next economic boom, and I want each of you to have a front row seat. Here on the CLC blog I’ll be posting interviews with leaders in the clean tech space. I’ll be interviewing policymakers, business leaders, and academics to give you an inside look at this historic time in California’s history.

Missed this...

I was at the convention with Steve last week and I didn't notice this, but it appears that Mayor Reed of San Jose has proposed a 15-year, Green Vision plan that will enable the city to be entirely sustainable on clean technologies. I remember reading in Men's Health a while back that San Jose was rated the number one city to live in in the nation (followed by I think Honolulu).

Climate Change is Now a Human Rights Issue!

The UN High Commission on Rights has finally recognized the obvious fact that climate change is an issue of human rights. The resolution that was passed argues that the poorest in the world are especially at risk. At the CLC, we understand that looking out for the most vulnerable in society is a moral obligation. After all, its why we are Democrats.

Gore Plans Ad Blitz

Former Vice President Al Gore has joined forces with a non-profit cleantech group, in an effort to recruit advocates who will work to fight global warming. Controller Westly and the rest of us at the CLC are thrilled at the Vice President's continued leadership on this critical issue. See the snippet below, or click the link for the whole article in the NY Times.

Self-powered music and video players show future of green tech

Now this is really fascinating. Imagine an ipod that doesn't EVER have to be charged from an outlet. Instead, there are new music-playing devices that will charge automatically through solar energy just by leaving it in a windowsill, even if it is overcast.

Climate crisis getting short shrift in US president race: Gore

Vice President Gore is concerned that the current presidential campaign has not focused enough on global warming. The Vice President is absolutely correct that the issue needs to be addressed without any ambiguity. We at the CLC view it as one of the preeminent issues that needs be addressed.

State scrambles to fund global warming fight

The San Francisco Chronicle reported last week that AB32, legislation designed to combat global warming, is still lacking a consistent means of funding.

Westly joins redistricting campaign

The other day, NewsBlaze reported that Steve has decided to join the redistricting campaign headed by California Voters First. Here are some of the clips from the article:

Scientists Would Turn Greenhouse Gas Into Gasoline

There was an article recently in the New York Times discussing an amazing possibility in the area of clean technology. Two scientists have discovered that in the next several decades, we may be able to convert the carbon dioxide that cars produce BACK into usable fuel!

Climate change funding jumps

The Sacramento Bee reported this past week that a group of U.S. and international investors based out of our great state as well as New York are going to work to invest more money in clean tech over the next several years. According to the article, this group has 4 goals (text from the article):

Discussion with Assemblyman Joe Nation

This week we had a chance to sit down with Assemblyman Joe Nation to discuss the future of clean tech in California. Assemblyman Nation was a leader and key co-author of California’s groundbreaking cap and trade policy and other environmental initiatives. I think you’ll find what he had to say interesting and inspiring.
